The Perfect Getaway:

It’s three weeks before finals week, and this is when the stress of final projects and tests begin to pick up. Saturday and Sunday I was truly at home with my mom, grandma, Uncle Andy, Aunt Bridget, and my cousins Connor and Dylan. I didn’t realize how much my little self-needed to go home to Fremont. The pace was slow, the question as to whether someone was going to come into the room at any minute was thrown out the window, and family love, support, and care was filling the space. I’m so glad I got quality time with my family and a deep breath before my home stretch to finals!

I Swear I’m Not High,

I just have allergies. Awful ones. Because my body hates flowers. And grass. And dust. And everything I inhale. But I had allergies so bad this week that I decided it would be a good idea to email my director for Measure for Measure telling him that when I come to rehearsal later, I am not actually high, hungover, or crying, I’m just drastically allergic to flowers. Also: EXCITING NEWS! The SCU 2017-18 Winter and Spring (Fall TBA) Mainstage Theatre Season has been announced: The Glass Menagerie AND Legally Blonde: The Musical – SO EXCITED!

It was Eh.

I suppose, compared to other weeks, you could call my week four of spring quarter “eh.” Nothing exceptionally extraordinary happened during the week. I will say that I did enjoy our sunshine and doing homework outside. Okay, maybe there was more tanning and laying in the sun more than anything. But either way, it was a productive week of catching up on work, hanging out on the green grass (because apparently, we’re not in a drought anymore?), eating good food, and rehearsing for Measure for Measure.

I Added my own Final.

No really, I just decided I was going to take up ANOTHER project and be an actor for the directing class final. No, I wasn’t in the class whatsoever, but apparently the student’s final was to direct a scene. Duh. But! They needed actors so I spent my Wednesday and Thursday nights in rehearsal, and performed a pretty hilarious scene Friday afternoon! It was a good time to laugh and create something from the bottom up with my friends. It was a perfect way to end a crazy-hectic week of memorizing monologues and scenes for my acting final and writing 12 pages in another!

Is it Summer, or..?

We hit 83 degrees (Fahrenheit) today! But it’s March? I forgot for a while that I am actually living in California! Sometimes I have to take a double take to realize that I’m living among the palm trees and sunshine and not in Central Oregon. Central Oregon where spring means mostly clear and frozen skies and dead grass and plants everywhere. I like it much better down here and it’s making me happy! One of my favorite things to do is study outside. Laying on a beach towel with friends and basking in the sun makes a 10 page annotated bibliography just that much more bearable.

I Really Did Lose it

And it was the one day that Aldo asked if I had it during the rehearsal process. Yes, out of all 18 weeks in this process the one day I lose my phone Aldo asks me to use it. Go figure, right? Of course, everyone found it to be pretty impressive that I happened to lose it in my room. Yes. I, a school supplies, clothes folding, organizational freak lost her phone in a 10 foot by 20 foot box. I would say that’s pretty talented and that explains how my mind has been working! For the record, I did end up finding it after rehearsal on the counter next to my toothbrush.

I’ve Been Shipped!

No, I did not buy a boat, no I did not get sent overseas, and no I’m not going on a crazy study abroad adventure (yet). But, our friend Squafam has officially made his return to the newsletters, and I believe he will continue to do so! As of February 13th, Christian and I are official! We may have been flirting and doing “couple-ish” things for a little while, but until 3am on February 10th, neither of us knew if the other one wanted to be more than friends, but we’re glad we both had the same answer. It’s a funny and cute story for sure! And yes, we are facebook official!

Tower Theatre Time?

I may have mentioned this before, but I am working with Education Outreach at the Tower Theatre Foundation to create an audition workshop for theatre students 13-19 years old. Not only am I apart of creating the logistical schedule, designing flyers and the program curriculum, but I will also be acting as the student’s acting coach for the week. Not only am I honored to be serving the students, but it was also a fun coincidence that I am taking acting this term and am gaining amazing resources to further my acting education and soon, my students!

Elections Happened

And I got free ice cream out of it. The resident director, a Democrat, was so shocked by the election outcome, that she took all of us “First Floor Flippers” to get ice cream. Despite what many people assume about Santa Clara University, there is a larger amount of Republicans on campus than one may think. Wednesday morning, the campus was silent. Fear was everywhere, and the fear was real. But what was astonishing, was that there were no riots. There were no protests. There were no fights, but safety pins everywhere. Look up the safety pin movement, I’ve got mine on.

Gratitude Corner

This one goes to my grandma! I got a lovely package this week, and it was full with surprises and love! Thank you for the sweets and the headbands; I wear them daily, and my Hydroflask is back to hydrating me!

Anticlimactic Holidays

Theatre majors have to sacrifice a good amount of social life to be social with other theatre people during rehearsals and shows. Halloween falling on a Monday (thanks, calendar), it also happened to fall on the first night of tech week! So what was the cast and crew of Arcadia doing on Halloween? Having the first tech run through. Did I mention that having theatre class on Halloween was the best and most hilarious experience ever? Because there’s nothing better than coming to class in costume, specifically Katniss Everdeen from Hunger Games, and watching your professors be in character for 65 minutes. Our professors were dressed up as foreigners, and not even for a split second did they break character. It was hilarious, better than any party any of us could have gone to, and one of the best in-class memory at SCU yet.

What is Carnal Embrace … ?

The question is answered later in the scene by a tutor, Septimus Hodge, but isn’t it fun to have the first line that opens the show come with a laugh? Arcadia opened last week to a full house and today, we close with a sold-out show. Despite half of the show being set in the early 1800’s, the themes and ideas challenged and discussed are timeless and extremely relevant to today. From the suppression of women’s voices to the power and consequences of lust, I’m proud to have been a part of creating such a powerful show and quite funny for that matter. This was my first show where there was no drama and no one had to say, “quite backstage please.” The cast and crew were full of professionalism, commitment, and passion which was stunning to see. We were so professional in fact, that we were able to fix what could have been a disaster. Arcadia requires the use of fire and water onstage, and one night, the water spilled everywhere. Naturally, as an Assistant Stage Manager would, I got off of headset, ran to get towels, and during a scene changes, went on and cleaned up the whole mess. We managed to save actors from slipping on the wet stage floor and preserved every prop, there are 101 of them, except a personal laptop. Do not worry, the department is reimbursing the student, but lesson learned as to why professional actors get charged when they request to use a personal item as a costume piece or prop in a show! For our beloved director, we knew we had to give her a memorable gift. So we crazy theatre majors went out and tracked down the playwright of Arcadia, Tom Stoppard, and realized he was going to be in San Francisco the week before opening night. Because we love our director so much, we managed to get in contact with Stoppard’s assistant and made arrangements for Stoppard to sign a poster of ours. It happened, and there are signatures and pictures to prove it!

I Exercised My Right

To vote! It was quick and easy and I’m happy to say that my first presidential election I voted in will without a doubt be in future textbooks. I’m currently obsessed with the new musical, Hamilton about, you guessed it, Alexander Hamilton. I a group wants to pitch in to buy me a ticket I will love you for eternity. and it’s amazing to see history happen right before your eyes! I have no idea how our country is going to change over the course of the next four years, but either way, I’m proud to vote because every single little vote matter! Especially this one! (more…)
