But Really, That’s Exactly What Happened

The day after Peter and the Starcatcher came to a close, I packed my bags (and my grandma’s car) in one night and left at 5am to fly away on a plane. Bless the weather and functioning aircrafts because there wasn’t a single delay! That was a huge relief because the minute I walked off the plane I called an uber, rode it straight to Santa Clara University, lugged my bags into Unity Commons, dropped them at my feet, I was greeted with a binder, and I went straight into a 3-hour meeting for LEAD. What a great and chill “welcome back” right? It sure elevated my heart rate!

Welcome Back, Friends!

Hello, my dear friends and family! Most of you are from my home base of Central Oregon, but some of you are currently residing in the Bay Area with me, or in far-off places like Chicago, New York, and even Australia and Indonesia. Although it’s quite unfortunate that I rarely get to see my loved ones all in the same place, I do have this fancy newsletter to stay connected with each one of you! Get ready for a fun ride of my reflections of the year, my ranting, my mistakes, and my triumphs and opportunities! This is also a document that I will carry with me once I move on from Santa Clara University. I want to have these newsletters for myself as well as a record and place to remember the weird, the ugly, and the hilarious everyday moments of my unique college life.

Operation Deer Part II:

Update! A week or so ago, Marie and I completed Operation Deer and gave Aldo a deer mask. Yes, the inside joke is a long story. Well a few days ago Marie and I looked through his office window and couldn’t find the mask! Did he throw it away? Did he hide it? We were sure to find out. So we walked into his office and Aldo scared us by hiding behind the door because he just wanted to hear us squeal, and then uncovered the hilarious truth. He is currently using our deer mask as a coat and hat rack. The mask is happily mounted in the wall, and the antlers are hard at work!

The Perfect Getaway:

It’s three weeks before finals week, and this is when the stress of final projects and tests begin to pick up. Saturday and Sunday I was truly at home with my mom, grandma, Uncle Andy, Aunt Bridget, and my cousins Connor and Dylan. I didn’t realize how much my little self-needed to go home to Fremont. The pace was slow, the question as to whether someone was going to come into the room at any minute was thrown out the window, and family love, support, and care was filling the space. I’m so glad I got quality time with my family and a deep breath before my home stretch to finals!

It’s the Little Things

We all have our favorite shower stall. We also all have the same toilet we want. Communal dorms are a special experience for sure but that doesn’t mean it can’t be amusing! For the record, the best sink is the one on the far left (the one on the right is a little loose), the shower that gets the best heat and water pressure is the third one from the left, and the cleanest toilet always seems to be the third one down. The only thing about that toilet is that the toilet paper holder fell down on me once. Oops. It’s a give and take, right? Right.

I Swear I’m Not High,

I just have allergies. Awful ones. Because my body hates flowers. And grass. And dust. And everything I inhale. But I had allergies so bad this week that I decided it would be a good idea to email my director for Measure for Measure telling him that when I come to rehearsal later, I am not actually high, hungover, or crying, I’m just drastically allergic to flowers. Also: EXCITING NEWS! The SCU 2017-18 Winter and Spring (Fall TBA) Mainstage Theatre Season has been announced: The Glass Menagerie AND Legally Blonde: The Musical – SO EXCITED!

It was Eh.

I suppose, compared to other weeks, you could call my week four of spring quarter “eh.” Nothing exceptionally extraordinary happened during the week. I will say that I did enjoy our sunshine and doing homework outside. Okay, maybe there was more tanning and laying in the sun more than anything. But either way, it was a productive week of catching up on work, hanging out on the green grass (because apparently, we’re not in a drought anymore?), eating good food, and rehearsing for Measure for Measure.

I Adulted Today!

No really, I did. I managed to coordinate, in about 48 hours, how to get housing for next year, how to play the system, figure out new roommates, find the room we want, find a plan B, C, D, E, F, and G just in case. And because I took initiative for myself, I managed to get Emma Smith and Silvana as AMAZING roommates for next year in the best dorm on campus, Graham, AND get the cheapest living plan on campus! I would say that I deserved a pat on the back, so I decided to eat a whole tub of ice cream that night.

Staff Meetings.

I had my first one for the LEAD program next year! To refresh the memory, I will be a LEAD Seminar Peer Educator next year with the LEAD First Generation program on campus. I am surrounded by the most diverse, sincere, and supportive group of people I know. Only being one step under the head of LEAD, Erin, is going to be amazing and I wouldn’t want anyone else in charge. I am so blessed and honored to be a part of the family during my time here as a student, and already one year later have the highest honor of giving back to younger LEAD scholars.

That Food Though!

Oakland, California sure does know how to cook some food! As I mentioned before, my spring break included an immersion trip to Oakland, CA conducted by the Ignatian Center at Santa Clara University. It was more than an amazing time it showed me, yet another lens in which people view what is right and what is going wrong in our world today. And just to make the trip that much better, we were exposed to some outstanding food from all different cultures. And don’t get me started on the ice cream. That was fantastic.
